Victoria B&J Parlor 1910s

B&J were one of the many catalog distributors operating on the east coast at the turn of the 20th century. Victoria was their in-house brand, made by the Oscar Schmidt Company. Oscar Schmidt became known for his parlor instruments. Stella is one of the well known brands produced by Oscar Schmidt. Stella guitars were used by Leadbelly and many other blues greats of the era. This 1910s B&J Victoria is a fantastic example of a 1910s Oscar Schmidt Made Parlor guitar.

This ladder braced guitar has a solid Spruce top and the back and sides are made out of solid quarter sawn Oak. The neck has a v-shaped profile with a nice chunky feel. The fretboard features dot mother-of-pearl inlays. On the slotted headstock we find the original plate tuners with black buttons and a Star-inlay.

This vintage parlor has some professionally repaired cracks on the top and sides (near the endpin), see photos. All cracks are repaired professionally by Riemersma Guitars and are stable. The cracks don’t affect the structure of the instrument. Cool detail; inside the body there’s a label to be found with the address of an old music store and the text “repaired by .. 6-4-1930”.

This vintage parlor has been set up with .010s and plays great. It’s the perfect Folk and Blues guitar.
