This circa 1892 S.S. Stewart “Lady Stewart” 5-string fretless banjo is a charming find. Made in Philadelphia, it is a smaller and more refined version of the standard 5-string banjo.
The Lady Stewart features a cherry neck, ebony fingerboard with beautiful mother-of-pearl inlay and a decorated headstock with moons and star. The short, 22 1/2-inch, neck is smooth and easy to play.
The dowel stick is inlaid with a Celluloid “Lady Stewart” logo, and an imprinted “SSS” logo in the shape of a headstock. The tailpiece is decorated with the signature “flower” ornament. The pot is 9 inches in diameter and features 20 brackets.
Over 130 years old, but this banjo is still a pleasure to play-light, and full of character. The banjo comes with a functional Ritter gig bag, along with an old English case. An interesting banjo for musicians and collectors alike!
