The 1913 Gibson Style O Artist Model

Some guitars are special because of their rarity. Others because of their design. This 1913 Gibson Style O Artist Model has both qualities.

This guitar came to us through a fellow enthusiast who is a friend of ours. You don’t come across a Gibson like this every day. When it first arrived, we actually considered keeping it for ourselves. But as dealers in rare vintage guitars, it’s a real pleasure to discover these instruments, hold onto them for a while, and ultimately pass them on to someone who will be just as excited about them.

Een gedurfd ontwerp uit de beginjaren van Gibson

To fully understand the Style O, we need to go back to Gibson’s early years. At that time, the company was still called the Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co., and the influence of mandolin-making was clearly evident. The arched construction and graceful contours stemmed directly from Orville Gibson’s ideas.

In 1908, Gibson introduced a completely new version of the Style O. While earlier models were still fairly traditional, this version featured the distinctive scroll at the top of the body, a design clearly inspired by Gibson’s famous F-style mandolins.

But the Style O wasn’t just designed to look unique. Its shape also served a practical purpose. The way the body tapered at the neck allowed the player to access fifteen frets without the body getting in the way. For its time, that was very innovative. The idea may seem obvious in modern guitar design, but Gibson was years ahead of many other brands in this regard.
