This 1957 Gibson GA-6 is a true player-grade amplifier from Kalamazoo, Michigan. In the mid-1950s, this was Gibson’s mid-range model, intended to compete with the Fender 5C3 Deluxe. The circuitry is also very similar, which is why the GA-6 was often nicknamed the “poor man’s tweed Deluxe.” Incidentally, it wasn’t any cheaper than the Fender at the time.
The exterior is covered with the original “oatmeal/poodle” textured fabric, which shows visible signs of wear. Several holes have been made in the housing in the past; the reason for this is unknown. The grill cloth is not original. The original handle is still present, but does not function fully. A good replacement handle is included.
As is often the case with this type of amplifier, the original logo was missing. We had the logo completely redrawn based on the original and then laser-cut from brass. It was then treated with a blackening process to achieve the right look. The end result is very convincing and matches the original design exactly.
The original Jensen Alnico Speaker dates back to the fourth week of 1957. The amplifier recently underwent maintenance, during which the electrolytic capacitors were replaced. The transformer has also been replaced over the years: it originally had a 5Y3 tube, but now features an EZ81 rectifier. The tube configuration consists of two 6V6GTs, one EZ81, one 12AX7, and one 6SL7. A grounded power cord has been installed for safe use.
The GA-6 delivers a powerful, warm tone with a character very similar to that of a Fender Deluxe. In short: a fantastic, compact combo for small gigs or as a characterful studio amplifier.
Comes with the original user manual.
